From the equality of rights springs identity of our highest interests; you cannot subvert your neighbor's rights without striking a dangerous blow at your own. Carl Schurz

Abandon all hope

Through me you pass into the city of woe: Through me you pass into eternal pain: Through me among the people lost for aye.

Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd: To rear me was the task of power divine, Supremest wisdom, and primeval love. Before me things create were none, save things Eternal, and eternal I endure. All hope abandon ye who enter here. Such characters in colour dim I mark'd Over a portal's lofty arch inscrib'd: Whereat I thus: Master, these words import.

While Dante was writing about the entrance to hell this seems also perfectly suited to the Canada of today, Harper's Canada.

Those of us who pay attention thus are fully aware of Harper's numerous crimes against democracy and human decency are forced to look on in despair as far too many have pulled the covers up over their heads and assumed the fetal position.

Afraid to peak outside of their cocoons lest they be confronted by uncomfortable truths. So a prime minister who should be rode out of town on a rail and held up as an example of everything wrong in politics and society today still has a chance to win re-election.

Abandon all hope.....

  1. hi Kev....I'm sorry you are feeling so down about the state of things these days, and I certainly don't blame you. These are depressing times. But please don't abandon hope. I can only speak for myself, and I don't want to sound preachy or anything. But what I would say is that Harper has actually never been more vulnerable. His fascist bravado is just a sign he's desperate, and he may even be on the brink of a nervous breakdown. His world is coming apart, and time is his enemy. So although things may look hopeless, think of it as the darkness that comes before the dawn. He will crack, we will win, and we will take this country back. Not just for ourselves, but for the generations that will follow us. We owe it to them never to surrender to those foul bullies. So cheer up eh? I'd be even more insufferably cheery if I didn't have a tooth pulled this afternoon, and wasn't in pain AND unable to smoke even one cigarette. I'm sure you're glad about that, because sometimes when you're down the last thing you need is a cheery idiot. ;) But you know what I mean. And this is true, even if I say it: The harder the struggle, the sweeter the victory...

  3. hi Kev...Excellent. I was worried that your dark mood might affect your superb selection of TGIF songs on Twitter. And that I might be exposed to some really depressing tune. Or Black Sabbath. NOOOOOOOO. And at this point, and in my present physical condition, that would probably be enough to push me over the edge. Oh well. It's going to be mostly sunny tomorrow, and only feel like -13 degrees. And the ice in the canal is safe to skate on. Thank goodness for small mercies. Have a great weekend !!!
