I've always viewed life as a series of choices, We can choose to do the right thing or we can choose the expedient option. We can choose to be kind or cruel, whether to be an engaged citizen or be apathetic.
The same is true of how our governments choose to raise revenue and to allocate our resources. We can choose to tax the rich and the corporations at an appropriate level or to slash much needed social programs. We can feed and educate our children or throw them in jail.
We can choose attack jets, drones and perpetual war or we can choose a humanitarian role internationally. We can build a better Canada and world if we want, it's all a matter of choice.
But we don't all get to make the choice. The government makes choices for us that are completely the opposite of what we want.
ReplyDeleteI always view life as a series of trade-offs. You give up something to get something else. We all give up a lot to live in a supposedly peaceful society focused on consumption and maintaining order.
Good morning Laura, Yes governments long ago stopped giving a damn what we think but we do get to choose how we respond.
ReplyDeleteAs for trade offs, we all make them in the course of our lives but I find personally given our current governments at all levels that I am much less inclined to do so these days
