"We're going to go out there and we are going to violate some rights"

That's what an officer claims in this excerpt from a new documentary The Hunted and the Hated an inside look at the NYPD's Stop and Frisk policy an NYPD captain said during a speech exhorting officers to Stop and Frisk New Yorkers.
This doc looks at the issue from two perspectives, the victims and the cops each perspective equally disturbing and chilling. One victim Alvin audio taped an encounter, recording officers saying they stopped him for being a "fucking mutt" and threatening to break his "fucking arm and punch him in the "fucking face". Of course the Mayor and the Police Commissioner are undaunted, claiming support among minority communities. As bad as this encounter was, what the officers say is equally disturbing. They testify that they are constantly harassed to write 250's (stop and frisk reports) and that not only is their job on the line if they don't do enough of these stops but also their safety.

We shouldn't be too smug here in Toronto, we have a similar program in place only we call it carding and many of these interactions go very much like the one you heard in the above video.
