How dare you treat refugees like people

That is pretty much what Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said to Ontario while ranting about Ontario having the temerity to defy the Harper government by paying to grant refugee claimants access to health care while they remain on our soil.

"I've expressed our government's disappointment with the Ontario government's recent decision to reinstate health-care benefits to all asylum seekers and even rejected refugee claimants," Alexander said.
"Simply arriving on our shores and claiming hardships isn't good enough. This isn't a self-selection bonanza, or a social program buffet."
Alexander's rant demonstrates clearly the mean spiritness that permeates the Harper regime one that while plays to their narrow base does not reflect the views of the majority of Canadians, which is why in addition to Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia have all stepped into the breach to offer similar coverage.

As bad as this is, it gets worse Alexander then went on to say "When it comes to our federal government's refugee reform, there is no room for disagreement," Which in my mind can only mean STFU and do as we say. That their word is god, there is no longer room in this country for dissent.

I know many say the Conservatives are fascists and while they do display fascist tendencies, I have resisted going there, it gets harder to maintain that stance with each passing day. If we are not careful that nightmare just may become a reality.

  1. Dear Colleagues,

Re: Petition supporting Economists Against Austerity

Recently a group of progressive economists spoke out against current government austerity policies.

In order to support them, I have started an on-line public petition.

Would you take a minute to read it and if you agree, add your name?

    The link is http://chn.ge/NMZW5n

    Many thanks for your help!

    Warmest regards,

    Larry
