Rightfully so much fuss is being made about Elections Canada's apparent disinterest is pursuing allegations of kickbacks and fraud in an alleged illegal re-reimbursement scheme perpetrated by David Del Mastro. A scheme designed to circumvent donation limits to his cousin Dean Del Mastro's 2008 election campaign
However I have to ask why is this file with Elections Canada in the first place, after all we are talking about potential criminal activity here. Putting aside the democratic implications of what has been alleged here for a moment defrauding the taxpayers is a serious offense one that should be investigated by the proper authourities which in the case are the Canada Revenue Agency and the RCMP. These agencies have the resources and the powers to properly investigate these allegations both of which Elections Canada lack.
The fact that all three of these agencies mandated with enforcing the regulations and laws of the land seem so disinterested here does nothing to maintain our confidence that our interests both democratic and legal are being served.
